Throughout the year, we receive calls about cats with newborn or young kittens found throughout the city. When possible, we believe kittens should be brought into foster care and adopted into loving homes rather than spending their lives in feral colonies. We recognize that not all rescue organizations share this philosophy.

Our ideal situation is being able to humanely trap a mother cat with her kittens, allowing her to safely care for and wean them. Once the kittens are weaned, the mother cat is spayed and returned to her colony, while the kittens are placed into foster care and later adopted once they are old enough.

Many of the kittens we receive have had little human interaction and may initially be “spicy,” but with gentle care and socialization, they typically become just as affectionate and loving as kittens born in homes. In other cases, kittens are found in exposed or unsafe locations, or the mother has not been seen for an extended period. In these situations, the kittens are brought into foster care immediately.

Each situation involving found kittens is carefully evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and unfortunately, not every litter can be fostered. If you discover a litter of kittens, it is often best to leave them where they are and contact us right away. Together, we can determine the safest and most appropriate course of action.
